Rest is not just a pause—it’s preparation for what’s next.

As the calendar year draws to a close, it’s natural to reflect on the journey you’ve traveled and anticipate what lies ahead. The transition from one year to the next offers a unique opportunity to pause, process, and plan.
For Black women, this reflection often includes celebrating our wins, honoring our existence and acknowledging the challenges we’ve overcome in many spaces.
Preparing for the new year is not about creating a perfect plan—it’s about setting intentions that align with your values and embracing the growth that comes with each step forward.
Reflecting on the Past Year
1. Celebrate Your Wins
Take a moment to recognize your accomplishments, no matter how big or small. Too often, we focus on what we didn’t do instead of appreciating what we’ve achieved.
What goals did you accomplish?
What challenges did you navigate with grace?
How have you grown personally, professionally, or emotionally?
2. Acknowledge the Challenges
Reflection is not just about celebrating—it’s also about being honest about what didn’t go as planned.
What lessons did you learn from setbacks or obstacles?
How can you use those lessons to move forward?
What are you ready to release as you step into the new year?
3. Honor Your Resilience
The past year may have brought unexpected hurdles, but you made it through. Give yourself credit for showing up, even when it was hard.
Preparing for the New Year
1. Set Intentions, Not Resolutions
Resolutions often focus on rigid goals, while intentions are about aligning your actions with your values and desires.
What do you want to feel, create, or experience in the new year?
How can your daily actions reflect those intentions?
Examples of intentions:
I will prioritize my mental and physical well-being.
I will embrace opportunities that align with my purpose.
I will nurture relationships that support and uplift me.
2. Create a Vision for the Year Ahead
Visualizing your ideal year can help clarify your goals and motivate you to take action.
Create a vision board with images, words, or quotes that inspire you.
Write a letter to your future self describing what you hope to achieve and how you’ll feel.
3. Plan with Flexibility
While setting goals is important, life often has its own plans. Build flexibility into your vision to adapt to changes without losing sight of your values.
4. Prioritize Rest and Renewal
Start the new year from a place of rest, not burnout. Use the final days of the year to recharge, reflect, and reset.
Rest is not just a pause—it’s preparation for what’s next.
5. Lean Into Community
You don’t have to navigate the new year alone. Connect with a supportive community to share goals, celebrate progress, and hold each other accountable.
Questions to Guide Your Reflection and Preparation
What am I most proud of from the past year?
What challenges taught me the most valuable lessons?
What do I want to leave behind as I move forward?
What excites me most about the new year?
How can I show up more authentically in the next year?
A New Year, A New Chapter
The transition into a new year is a chance to reset—not to become a different person, but to honor who you are while embracing opportunities for growth.
Reflect on the past with gratitude and step into the future with courage and clarity.
The year ahead is unwritten, and you hold the pen. Write your story with intention, joy, and a commitment to living authentically.
